Ask the Readers: What Are Some Weekend Money-Making Ideas?

Making Money / Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

I got an interesting email from a reader recently. She wrote:

My name is Jessica and I’m 21. I’ve been recently engaged and currently my fiance and I are trying to save for a down payment on our first house.

I recently read one of your articles about selling on craigslist, which I found very helpful but it sparked an idea.

I was thinking, since we are trying to save money if we could come up with a list of “money-making” activities to do over a weekend. Like a different project each weekend for the whole summer. So instead of sitting at home, wanting to do something that costs money, we could make a list of activities to choose from that would help us make money to save. Since financials is your thing I was hoping you could help me out.

I like the way Jessica thinks!

I have some thoughts but I’d like to see what suggestions you all can come up with for Jessica too. Please weigh in with your money-making ideas for these soon-to-be newlyweds.

  1. How about spreading the word to family and friends that the couple is for hire to do projects such as painting (inside or out), yard work, fix-up jobs, child care – whatever skills they may have. And a good test of the relationship as a bonus!

    1. Lol Teresa, good point about the relationship bonus. I like your idea and I would suggest specializing in one or two projects that they especially enjoy.

    1. Excellent idea, Lance. And if they’ve done a little selling of their own stuff first it will help them develop that eye.

  2. My Mom hires a couple to do her yard work and heavy cleaning. I’d love to hire someone who would do yard work with me. I think there are all sorts of chores people would pay for – be a general handyman/handywoman team, offer to run errands, babysit, etc. You won’t get rich but you can make money.
