NYC Trip Report: UN Tour, Toys R Us, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Junior’s

Day Three
United Nations Tour: This is one I really wanted to do and I wasn’t sorry. Despite the fact that so much was going on here with the Middle East, it was a Saturday and the building was pretty empty except for the tourists. That turned out to be a good thing because we had access to all of the public areas like the Security Council and General Assembly Hall.

Cost of the tour for four: $38

Toys R Us: Only in New York could you go from a United Nations Tour to the largest Toys R Us on Times Square. This was a consession to my eleven year-old and despite the crowds and crass commercialization, it was kind of fun.

The main draw is the three-story indoor ferris wheel where the cars are things like Barbie Convertibles and Scooby Do’s Mystery Machine. The cost to ride the ferris wheel was $4/each.

They had other cool things like a 20-foot T Rex, alife-size Barbie Dream House and replicas of NY buildings made out of Lego’s.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral: We had visited St. Patrick’s as part of our Gray Line Tour and since we are Catholic we decided to go back and experience Mass there. The church is huge and beautiful and full of sightseers. The most impressive thing for my family were the Stations of the Cross, which appear to have been carved into the stone walls.

It was pretty full at the Saturday 5:30 Mass but the atmosphere was very reverant. It was a stark contrast and a nice reprieve from all the activity happening just outside on Fifth Avenue.

Junior’s Cheesecake: The dining on the trip was pretty unremarkable because we mostly ate on the run. We did want to make sure we hit at least on New York institution, however, so we ate at Junior’s.

Junior’s began in Brooklyn but we ate at the Manahattan location across from our hotel. The food was wonderful and the cheesecake…well, what’s not to love?

Our total bill for four was $120.
